By popular demand, two Humboldt penguins Pringle and Widget have returned to Bernadette House care home. Penguins first visited the home in October 2019 and were greeted with such delight, it was only a matter of time before they made a repeat appearance.
“We were a victim of our own success,” says Elizabeth Stephens, care home director. “The penguins first visit was in response to a wish by a resident to meet a penguin. Photographs from the visit are displayed around the home and current residents often ask when they too can meet a penguin.”
She got in touch with Heythrop Zoological Gardens in Oxfordshire, whose 13 Humboldt penguins are used to being handled and working on camera or at events. “Everyone had a wonderful time, including the penguins,” said Elizabeth, whose past guests have included squirrel monkeys, alpacas and spring lambs.
Resident Jean Williams was thrilled to meet a penguin. “They’re beautiful creatures. I can’t believe how soft their feathers are,” she said. “Today has been a real treat.”
Animal and bird therapy is a cornerstone of care at Bernadette House. Those living with dementia have a special connection with animals due to their calming and non-threatening demeanour. It’s a fantastic way for those living with dementia to reconnect with past memories and enjoy a mentally stimulating and joyful experience. And of course, the staff had a wonderful time too!
